Discover how 22 years of dedication, a passion for helping others, and a lifelong love for bingo led Carolyn Young to become an invaluable Direct Support Professional (DSP) at New Avenues to Independence.

Known for her spunky personality, Carolyn Young has made a profound impact on the lives of the individuals she supports at New Avenues to Independence. Over the last 22 years, Carolyn has worked as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) in our Community-Based Services, empowering individuals receiving waiver services to live fulfilling lives.

From Family Bingo Nights to a 22-Year DSP Career

Growing up, Carolyn's mother was an avid bingo player, regularly heading out to local halls for games.

"When I turned 18, I started to go with her regularly to the bingo halls," said Carolyn.

The mother-daughter duo developed a shared passion for playing the game in person—noting that playing online and at home isn't the same. This active community involvement, combined with having a late cousin with disabilities, ultimately steered Carolyn toward a career dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities.

After applying twice, she landed the role despite having no prior experience as a DSP:

"I used to play bingo with PVA, and I wanted to work with the people. After two applications, I got the role as a Direct Support Professional. I didn't have any experience as a DSP, but I have a late cousin with disabilities, who is probably the biggest reason I went into this field."

Carolyn's Journey with New Avenues to Independence

About a year before the Parent Volunteer Association (PVA) officially became New Avenues to Independence, Carolyn started her career as a Direct Support Professional for our waiver homes. Her love for the game naturally carried over into her new professional life, bridging her personal connections with her work:

"I used to take my cousin and individuals to PVA bingo," she shared.

Despite working with the organization for over two decades, she has dedicated her time to just three homes across Northeast Ohio, but has always stayed in Euclid and Cleveland Heights. Today, she supports one of our waiver homes in Euclid.

Empowering Individuals in Community-Based Services

Although she has transitioned between a few of our waiver homes on the east side during her tenure, one constant has remained.

"I have always worked with four women at a time," explained Carolyn.

This consistent group size has allowed her to build deep, meaningful connections and truly understand each resident's unique personality.

Each morning, the household gathers to discuss daily plans, ensuring that every individual's needs and interests are met. While the ladies at her current home share interests such as attending Northcoast's events, dressing up for Halloween, going to dances, seeing movies, and showing off their skills at the bowling alley, they also enjoy personalized routines.

One resident finds great satisfaction in tidying up spaces, while another prefers relaxing and flipping through magazines. The individuals she supports also enjoy exploring different local dining spots tailored to their personal tastes, including Applebee's, Seafood, Olive Garden, and Chagrin River Diner.

Through these daily interactions, Carolyn has forged lifelong bonds. When asked about her longevity in the field, her answer is simple:

"When people ask me why I love my job and have stayed here for 22 years, I always tell them, it's the people. I love my clients. That's why I'm here. They bring joy to my life. I love everyone here," expressed Carolyn.
