New Avenues to Independence is proud to announce that for the seventh year we celebrated National Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Recognition Week. “Without the work of our DSPs, the lives of hundreds of individuals and their families would be disrupted. National DSP Recognition Week is one small way to demonstrate our gratitude for what they unselfishly do every day for so many,” said Tom Lewins, New Avenues Executive Director.

DSPs are the people who work as direct care workers, in-home support workers, personal assistants and attendants to ensure that people with disabilities are able to live more independently and in community settings.

During the week of September 7th, New Avenues hosted numerous activities to celebrate its everyday heroes, their DSPs. Events included:

Direct Support Professionals 2014 Ohio Recognition Event – DSPs traveled to this statewide event on September 10 in Columbus. The day of entertainment featured Comedian, Rob Snow, networking, sharing, education, reinforcement, encouragement and rejuvenation for these hardworking professionals. Peggy Davis, Valerie Eutsey, Joretha Calloway and Keith Hilbish represented New Avenues.

Staff Appreciation Picnics – New Avenues management hosted several picnics with hot dogs barbequed by Executive Director, Tom Lewins, along with salad, baked beans, “thank you” cakes and refreshments served by members of the administration. Festivities were held at five different locations throughout the week.

Give-aways – Drawings were held with DSPs winning exciting prizes such as: AutoZone gift cards, Walmart gift cards, tickets for Beck Center, a family pass for the USS Cod, club seats to the Lake Erie Monsters, tickets to the Cleveland Gladiators and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum and more.
