Cathy Goes for the Gold!

print
Cathy B. has enjoyed living with seven other ladies in the Lakewood Group Home since June, 2009.   Although she is non-verbal, she makes it quite clear that she is anxious to return to the home after being gone for any length of time.  Because Cathy likes to be busy you might find her covering metal coat hangers with colorful yarn or putting a several hundred piece jigsaw puzzle together.

Aside from these activities, she has been active in Special Olympics since 2002.  Initially she played Bocce Ball, but in the fall of 2007 her coach suggested that she try Nordic Skiing.   Despite the cold winter temperatures, Cathy immediately took to skiing and has enjoyed it ever since.  During the Winter Special Olympics this February, she won medals for the 100 meter race and the 500 meter race.  Special Olympics has been a wonderful part of her life.  She has learned to do things that she never would have done otherwise and has a feeling of success as a result. All of the athletes take the Special Olympic Oath:  “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”  She is hoping to participate in Track and Field during the coming Summer Special Olympics.
