Buckeye Industries expands community engagement and integration efforts

In response to the changes in the CMS rules and the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities Transition Plan, Buckeye Industries, our Vocational Services Program, is in the process of transforming its services beginning  with the expansion of community engagement and integration.
To assist with our expansion efforts, Antoinette “Toni” Speed joined New Avenues in June as the new Community Engagement Associate for Buckeye Industries.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science and has over 10 years’ experience as an activities professional. In this new position, Toni has helped participants of Buckeye Industries become more integrated in the community by providing recreational and volunteer activities including Good Deed Outings for participants who receive Day Services and  engaging volunteers from the community  with groups such as Job Corp.
Because of Toni’s efforts, participants of our Buckeye Industries program  volunteer at Naturally Gifted Fitness Center once a week. Every Monday, individuals volunteer at the Center where they help with light cleaning of the equipment.
Every other Wednesday, individuals from Day Services volunteer their time to help the residents at Eliza Bryant Village and Southern Hills Nursing Home.
On September 14th, the ladies of Buckeye Industries enjoyed of a day pampering with lunch and manicures at Lash Bar Salon in Cleveland Heights.
Earlier this fall, a group of individuals attended Browns Training Camp. On September 17th individuals, volunteers and staff enjoyed a relaxing day of warm weather, fishing, good music and BBQ at the annual Picnic and Fishing Derby sponsored by American Family Ministry at Ledge Lake.
The students of Case Western Reserve University visited Day Services on August 20th for their student day of service. The students and individuals worked together on centerpieces for Applause at the State and on a CreateAbility art project that is being displayed at several different libraries.
